3rd Annual fashion Week 2015
Dorchester Academy and Massachusetts College of Art and Design's fashion department collaborated on our third annual fashion show this semester! Ms. Schuermann's After Hours Art Club and Applied Design Class, and Mrs. Prefontaine's Creativity Lab took part in the six-week long project. Students were introduced to this year's fashion design challenge during an engaging, interactive field trip to Mass Art. This year, they were challenged with creating wearable garments made of only paper. Student designers teamed up, visualized their concepts, and began making their ideas become reality.

During the students' final week of studio time, the Huffington Post came to write an article on the students and their work. (Link Below) When it came down to the final show and exhibition, every student completed a garment to display on a mannequin or strut down the runway.
This year's dynamic, colorful stage set was designed by the Foundation Visual Art and Creativity Lab II classes. The fashion show was a major success and a memory all DA Bears will always remember! Thank you to everyone who helped make this final Fashion Week the best one yet! |

Students participated in a week long design challenge conceptualizing a unique Converse, All Stars sneaker design that communicated an aspect of their identity. The theme was "Together, We're Different." On Friday of that week, our incredible partners at VSA hosted a series of design sessions through out the school day with consultation from Converse professionals. The Converse Corporation donated
more than 200 pairs of sneakers in the students' shoe sizes for the project. A variety of materials were provided ranging from fabric markers, stencils, fabrics, gem stones, recycled materials, and unique laces. Students used their created templates to guide their design process, and developed remarkable, detailed custom sneakers in two hour's time. 60 designs were chosen for display through out the month of January at the Converse Corporate Headquarters in North Andover, the Converse Store on Newbury Street in Boston, or at the VSA Open Doors Gallery in Downtown Boston. This incredible opportunity gave students a peek into the professional world of industrial and fashion design. We want to thank Converse for their generous sponsorship of this event, which exceeded $10,000 of funding!

Kehinde Wiley (born 1977) is a New York-based portrait painter, who is known for his highly realistic paintings of people of color in heroic poses. Wiley is part Yoruba from Nigeria and African-American. His painting style has been compared to traditional portraitists as Reynolds, Gainsborough, Titian and Ingres. Wiley’s paintings often combine traditional and contemporary modes of representation. He creates a fusion of period styles, ranging from French Rococo, Islamic architecture and West African textile design. For example, Wiley's Napoleon Leading the Army over the Alps (2005) is based on Napoleon Crossing the Alps (1800) by Jacques-Louis David.
Foundation Visual Arts students created their own Kehinde-Wiley style portraits, using Renaissance paintings as inspiration. Students started by researching the time period between the 14th and 17th century in Spain, France, or Italy. They each choose a painting from the period they connected with, and used it as inspiration for their own portraits. |
Observation Drawing
Foundation Visual Arts students learn how to draw from observation. Through observing 3-D forms and various objects, they practiced gesture drawing, contour drawing, scaling objects, and shading techniques.
Elements of Art Cubes
Students learn and practice the various Elements of Art by constructing and designing a 3D cube.
