Recognizing the importance of the arts in our lives and world, students expressed an ardent desire to create in the classroom. Headmaster, Mr. Kwesi Moody, responded by making a commitment to the arts. Established in 2009, the Arts Department at Dorchester Academy was founded under the inspiring leadership of artist and educator Ms. Chandra Dieppa Ortiz. Thanks to a generous grant from the BPS Arts Expansion Fund, arts programming at Dorchester Academy grew from 0% of arts offered to 13% of students receiving weekly in-school arts instruction. In its second year, 56% percent of students received weekly in-school arts instruction. Today, the number of students receiving direct arts instruction continues to rise and our program offers a multitude of diverse arts courses, both in and outside of the school; an array of quality arts partnerships; and spirited school-wide arts events, performances, and exhibitions.
